Who We Are

The Minstrel Players have been around as a Long Island Theatrical Troupe since early 2000. The original concept of The Minstrel Players was developed by Executive Producer Ray Palen and his sister Tara. Ray and Tara have a lifetime of performance experience and Ray and his wife and Co-Producer, Debbie, sat on the board of a popular theatre group in Queens before starting their own venture.

The Minstrel Players mission is to provide "World Class" entertainment at an affordable price. Above and beyond that, The Minstrel Players seek to work with other actors and theatre professionals who share the same love of the craft that they have. This includes buying into the concept of "checking your ego at the door" - an ideology that has worked well for this tight-knit group. We truly believe that putting together the right chemistry of individuals makes for a better performance in every way!

In addition to those already mentioned, the backbone of The Minstrel Players include: Rob Cashman - our brilliant Technical Director, Edward Kyle III - a seasoned Stage Manager and Director and Bernie Caprera - one of the top Lighting Directors on Long Island. We also are eternally grateful to the late Nicky Star - our personal videographer for years and creator of many of our signature props and set pieces - his legacy lives on the Minstrel Stage!

The Minstrel Players on-stage talent is made up of a mix of regulars and newcomers. We apply an "open-door" policy to all who want to be a part of our productions and encourage new talent/backstage help to join us. Some key members who have contributed to The Minstrel Players success in this capacity are: Karen Ottomano - the on-stage backbone of several Minstrel productions; Roseann Baldanza - an original Minstrel and frequent actor; and many, many other hard-working and wonderfully talented actors who are too numerous to list individually.

Some Minstrels have gone above and beyond in way of creativity, extra effort or pure talent. The Minstrels recognize them by induction into The Minstrel Players Hall of Fame

We enjoy what we do and hope it shows in each and every performance. Please come and see a Minstrel Players production and find out what we're all about! Enjoy!

Bernie Caprera (Lights): This begins Bernie's 17th year in community theater and he is again happy about working with the Minstrels, the best group on Long Island. Some of his favorite productions are: The Odd Couple (both male and female versions), Wait Until dark, Agnes of God, Dangerous Obsession, Waiting in the Wings and Steel Magnolias. Bernie is dedicating this show to Nicky Starr. Has it been a year already? DOB, RB, love Dakota.

Rob Cashman (Tech Director): Rob has been involved with community theatre for over 19 years, since his early teens. Generally, he shies away from the stage and those really bright lights, but has been known to step out for tiny parts that make people Laugh Out Loud. More often, he can be found with a hammer or screw gun, rearranging pieces of the set. Rob is also in charge of sound, and makes use of his extensive computer experience to provide digital sound effects for all Minstrel Productions. His first theatre experience was with Marathon Community Theatre Group's production of "Mame". He worked with them on every show for 10 years and also joined up with the FSF group for a couple shows, where he realized he was a Minstrel at heart. Rob thoroughly enjoys working with the Minstrel family as well as the strays that wander in and out of the group. His real family includes wife Rebecca, and future Minstrels, Mackenzie and Logan. Rob is a support engineer, employed by a software company partly responsible for annoying telemarketing calls and long hold times. Shout outs to Minstrels Gone Wild everywhere!

He is a veteran of Long Island theater with prior roles such as Stanley in "Broadway Bound", Buddy in "Come Blow Your Horn", Tony in "Weekend Comedy", and Billy in "The Goat". The opportunity to play the nefarious Macready with this talented cast is a dream situation and he is delighted to once again thrill Long Island audiences with his shtick! Phil Gellis: Although this is Phil’s debut with The Minstrel Players, it’s hardly his first exposure to the works of Neil Simon. All told, this the 8th Simon play Phil has either performed in or directed (or both). A veteran of some 85 roles throughout Long Island theater, Phil’s favorite roles include Jake in “Jake’s Women,” Oscar Madison and Murray the Cop in “The Odd Couple,” Pseudolus and Hysterium in “...Forum,” Nicely-Nicely in “Guys and Dolls,” Mr. Mushnik in “Little Shop of Horrors” and, in over 100 performances in 7 different productions over the past 20 years, Sancho in “Man of La Mancha.” He has also directed over two dozen shows, including Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park,” “Come Blow Your Horn” and “The Gingerbread Lady.” Phil just completed a tour of many of Long Island’s parks as “old’ Joe Boyd in “Damn Yankees.” He wishes to express his gratitude to everyone at Minstrel Players for their willingness to schedule rehearsals around his sometimes-crazy tour schedule. Phil had the pleasure in 1975 of seeing Vincent Gardenia and Charles Nelson Reilly in "God's Favorite" on Broadway. He dedicates his performance to both their memories.

She most recently dramaturged the production of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar at Suffolk County Community College. He once hitched a ride with Mohammed Ali, while he was in a High School band, and was seen stepping out of Ali's limo with a few lovely girls on his arm. He worked as a bartender where he served drinks to the late, great Jackie Gleason and Big-Band Leader Duke Ellington. Larry is still keeping up appearances today - he stole the show from a famous Doo-Wop group The Cadillacs, and had the fans applauding his performance!

Since 1989, he has appeared in over a hundred productions spanning theatre, film and television. However he believes that nothing comes close to the electricity of a live theatre performance. Eventually the inevitable happened - he and a couple friends started a production company, Crawlspace Films. They have been producing films for five years, three of which have won awards and a finalist in the "I love NY" short film competition.
